18th Aug 09, Chelsea and Wigan matchday
Sunderland 1-3 Chelsea
Another come back win for Chelsea after conceding an early goal to Darren Bent at 18th minutes, it is his 2nd goals in 2 matches. Chelsea came back with a goal at the 52nd minute from Ballack. For Sunderland, things just went downhill for them. Lampard scored with a spot kick at the 61st minute, followed by Deco’s far ranged goal at the 80th minute bringing Chelsea back to the top of the league.
Chelsea clearly dominated the whole game just as they had done against Hull City, their first matchup of the season. Chelsea maintained 75% possession and took a total of 26 shots while Sunderland only managed 4 attempts with just 1 shot on target and that was Bent’s goal. There were a total of 4 yellow cards issued in the game, to Richardson, Ivanovic, Cana and Drogba.
Wigan 0-1 Wolves
An early goal by Andrew Keogh sealed the first win for Wolves in this season. Wigan deserved a point at least with their second half performance where they forced Wolverhampton into constant defence. Wigan dominated the match with 66% possession and fired 20 shots throughout the match. The problem is that Wigan lacked strikers with good finishing that could have changed the tide of the game. Both Milijas and Halford made their debut for Wolves in this match.
