Preston North End have completed the transfer of defender Steven Smith from Norwich City on a free transfer. The Scottish left back could make his Preston debut in this weekend’s League one clash against Scunthorpe United. Smith can also play in midfield if required, a quality that would certainly have attracted Lilywhites gaffer Phil Brown.

Smith started his career with Rangers and played eight years with them before joining Norwich on a Bosman. He was once very highly regarded at Ibrox Park and was also capped by Scotland U-21. However a series of injuries resulted in him losing his first team spot. At Norwich, he found it difficult to settle and was therefore shipped out on loan to Aberdeen in the 2011 January window.

Turkish international Sanli Tuncay has returned to England by signing for Bolton Wanderers on a season long loan. The former Stoke forward, who moves from German outfit VFL Wolfsburg, has passed a medical and signed a contract and now requires his work permit to be authorised by the Home Office to rubberstamp his transfer. Tuncay made the announcement on social networking site Twitter.

Sakarya born Tuncay played for Sakaryaspor and Fenerbahce in his home country before joining Middlesbrough in 2007. Two years later, he joined Stoke in August 2009, but found success hard to come by with the Potters. Wolfsburg offered him an escape route in January earlier this year which he accepted.

According to reports, Bolton can make his loan move permanent by paying £3m to Wolfsburg at the end of the season.

League One Carlisle United have officially announced the signing of young defender James Tavernier on loan from Newcastle United. The versatile youngster, who can play as both full back and centre half, will be with the Cumbrians for an initial one month period.

Tavernier, a product of the Leeds youth system, joined Newcastle in 2008. He had a one month loan stint at Gateshead in January this year that was extended by another two months. The 19 year old’s only Magpies appearance so far has come in a League Cup tie against Accrington Stanley.

Carlisle boss Greg Abbott moved quickly to sign Tavernier, following an injury to Franklin Simek, who is expected to be out for an indefinite duration following hip damage in their opening game of the season against Notts County.
